For their final year of the Middle Years Programme (MYP), our grade 8 students completed their Community Projects. These projects are a year-long initiative where students investigate and take action on an issue, they are passionate about.
For Aidan B. in grade 8, he is passionate about destigmatizing homelessness. Aidan has spent time researching the many factors and causes of homelessness, and what he and his peers can do to help solve this growing issue.
Part of Aidan’s research included interviewing his mother, who works at St. Michael’s Hospital, and learning more about her experiences serving the homeless community as a Registered Nurse in downtown Toronto. This is where he was introduced to Fred Ellerington, a Homeless Outreach Worker at St. Michael’s Hospital. Mr. Ellerington generously offered to share his insights and experience about homelessness.
On Monday, April 24th, the grades 7 and 8 students had the opportunity to attend an interview with Mr. Ellerington, to learn more about this pressing issue, and how they can get involved. Thank you to Aidan and Mr. Ellerington for conducting this informative presentation.
