My name is Adam Yhap. I attended Town Centre starting in grade one and graduated from Town Centre Private High School in 2013. I have completed my Bachelor of Science at York University focused on Biology and I am in the process of completing my Bachelor of Education in the primary/junior program at Western University with a specialization in international education. Currently I am in my second year of teacher’s college having completed a variety of classroom placements and recently had the opportunity to do an Alternative Field Experience at Town Centre working with Mrs. Mathew and the grades seven and eight students. During my AFE I had the opportunity to observe what it is like to teach in a grade seven and grade eight IB Science class. Reflecting upon my experience there are some key differences in the way the curriculum was taught in comparison to my time while at Town Centre. Specifically, with the IB programme I noticed there was a focus on helping students to develop a global perspective in their thought process and application of knowledge. This was something that stood out to me, where students took the knowledge they acquired in Science and thought about how they could apply what they learned in reference to the rest of the world. This added depth to the students and their learning process while engaged in inquiry based learning. I had a wonderful experience and really enjoyed my time being back at Town Centre. I will take the skills I learned to help guide and improve my teaching practice in the future. My current goals, upon graduating from Western, are to travel and teach in a variety of international schools in different countries and will take what I have learned from all of my placements working with amazing teachers to help provide an engaging, fun, and safe learning environment for my students. I am not just a classroom teacher I am a school teacher.
