For the month of November, the IB Learner Profile focus is Thinkers. We want to encourage our students to use critical and creative thinking skills to analyze and take responsible action on complex problems. To coincide with the IB Learner Profile focus, TCPS held its annual Anti-Bullying Week from November 18th to 22nd with the national theme this year being “Choose Respect”!
Anti-Bullying Week commenced with Yellow Ribbons and Odd Sock Day. Students tied yellow ribbons on the playfield fence in recognition of anti-bullying awareness. Students also wore odd socks to represent everyone’s uniqueness and individuality.
Tuesday marked our very popular “Buddy Day”, pairing students from different classes together and giving them an opportunity to participate in interactive activities relating to the topics of respect, kindness, and the importance of standing up against bullying. They participated in the “TCPS Bully-Free Quest,” a game promoting a safer school community. Wednesday was devoted to House League Intramurals in the Main Gymnasium playing soccer to build teamwork, cooperation and good sportsmanship.
Marking the annual Pink Shirt Day on Thursday, our younger students watched the Pink Shirt video to better understand the significance of the Pink Shirt. The older students in grades 6 to 8 had a presentation by York Region Police about online safety, cyberbullying, and being a respectful community leader.
The students and staff wrapped up the week on Friday and the students enjoyed an assembly and special presentation featuring guest speaker, Scott Graham, an international speaker best known for inspiring leadership in youth and teaching leadership with usable anti-bullying strategies, will speak to students. Students also watched a video recapturing the week’s events and view a special message from the Student Activity Council.
Anti-Bullying Week raised awareness, promoted a safe school environment, and created a positive learning experience.
