IB MYP Community Project – Battery Recycling Program

Grades 6, 7 and 8 Service Learning is an integral part of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) at TCPS and is a mandatory requirement for students to complete. It starts in the classroom and extends beyond it, requiring students to take an active part within the communities in which they live. This is achieved through a process of discovery of self and community and reflections inside as well as outside the classroom. Students may volunteer within the school, locally, nationally or internationally.

For their project, two of our grade 8 students started a battery recycling initiative. Over the course of 2.5 weeks, they collected 234 batteries from their fellow grade 8 students and their families.  That’s 39 lbs of collected batteries, of which 13 lbs would have leaked toxic materials into the environment because they were badly corroded.
