September 30, 2021, marked the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. The day is meant to recognize and commemorate the legacy of residential schools where tens of thousands of First Nations children were taken from their families and forced to attend classes that separated them from their culture. This is an important step towards raising awareness of the very tragic legacy of residential schools and to honour thousands of survivors. It was a day to listen, reflect and learn about Canada’s past, in hopes of a better future for indigenous people. The Amarillo Campus students honoured the First Nations children by wearing orange “Every Child Matters” wristbands.
