The Montessori Advantage – A Solid Foundation
The Montessori program is based on a well-known philosophy and teaching methodology created by Dr. Maria Montessori. Students learn in an inviting and intellectually stimulating classroom led by Montessori trained teachers. The Montessori classroom offers a well-rounded education, fostering both conscious and subconscious learning.
Key benefits of the TCPS Montessori program include:
- Individualized Learning: The program is designed to cater to each child’s unique pace and level of understanding. This personalized approach helps children progress without feeling rushed or held back.
- Stimulating Environment: Classrooms are intellectually stimulating and equipped with materials that encourage hands-on learning. This environment helps children develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Focus on Sensitive Periods: The Montessori method capitalizes on children’s “sensitive periods” between the ages of 2 and 5, when they are most receptive to learning new skills and concepts.
- Practical Life Skills: Activities in the Montessori classroom teach children practical life skills such as pouring, opening boxes, and handling books. These activities help children develop independence and confidence.
- Sensorial Development: Montessori materials are designed to refine children’s senses and prepare them for future academic work in areas like mathematics, geometry, and visual arts.
- Mathematics: Children use tangible materials to explore mathematical concepts, which enhances their understanding and retention. The materials are progressive complexity moving from basic number recognition to complex abstract mathematics, fostering a deep comprehension of math.
- Language: Starting with phonetic sounds and progressing to building words, sentences, and paragraphs helps children develop strong reading and writing skills. Students advance from word building to learning to construct complex sentences and use proper grammar which improves their overall language proficiency.
- Cultural Activities: Combining Science, Geography, and History, these activities stimulate curiosity and analytical thinking. Children benefit from early exposure to diverse subjects, which lays a strong foundation for future academic success.
- Experienced Teachers: The program is led by Montessori-trained teachers who provide gentle guidance and support, ensuring that each child receives the attention they need
The Montessori program at TCPS aims to provide a well-rounded education that fosters a love for learning and prepares children the International Baccalaureate programmes.
